About CNHSThe Society holds field meetings throughout spring, summer and autumn when those taking part can learn about the birds, plants, insects and mammals of local woods, marshes and river valleys. There are coach outings at all times of the year to key nature reserves and wildlife habitats throughout East Anglia and south-east England led by friendly expert naturalists. Throughout autumn, winter and spring there are illustrated talks by leading naturalists and wildlife travellers as well as teach-ins on identification of birds, plants and insects. Particularly popular are the Tuesday evening plant surveys and wild flower identification sessions throughout the season in all kinds of local habitats led by experienced botanists.
Acclaimed publications produced by CNHS are "The Wild Flowers of North East-Essex", by Terri Tarpey and Jerry Heath, "The Lepidoptera (Butterflies and Moths) of North-East Essex", by Brian Goodey and Joe Firmin, "The Grasshopper and Crickets of Essex", by Alan Wake, which is illustrated in full colour and "The Butterflies of Colchester and North East Essex" which was published in 2002. (Click the photo opposite for full details of this exciting book) The Society also publishes Cervus, a regular newsletter containing articles, book reviews, discussions and a programme of Events. "Nature in North-East Essex" is an illustrated annual journal which includes in-depth reports and studies on the work being done by the Society and its members. CNHS played the leading part in the establishment of the Essex Moth Group in 1996 and Society members with a specialised interest in moths regularly carry out mercury vapour lamp surveys not only in the Colchester area but throughout Essex. |
